Surrounded by the enchanted and treacherous forest of Stormwood, a young woman named Syren struggles to survive within the fledgling, frontier settlement of Westpost. Longing to find the greater purpose of her life, she strives to carry on the work of her father, and to solve the mystery of his disappearance. One of the town's original settlers, he was lost while on patrol against the savage creatures which hold town and townsfolk in their menacing embrace. Opposed by the Palace and assisted by two odd, but endearing strangers who aren't quite human, a one-legged bard and an old man of means, Syren quickly becomes swept into conflict, doing battle in a world of magic, monsters, and alchemy, yet somehow every victory stacks the odds higher against her. Can Syren foil the plans of the arrogant Baron, gain closure over her past, and strike a blow against the brutal savages who rule the forest, or will the oppressive evil of Stormwood consume everyone, as it has done so many times before?

Main characters were well developed and interesting. I really enjoyed the plot, which gave me some dread at times, where you could share the toil and urgency that the main characters experienced, but it left a glimmer of hope throughout. The story world seems to be well fleshed out, I would like to see more books set in the same world.Product details

Syren Call Rick Skowronski 9781634175869 Books Reviews
Fun read. Shared this with students I taught in various schools I filled in for as substitute teacher. I highly recommend this book/author to all readers.
I absolutely LOVE this book. I can honestly say that this is a book that should be on the big screen however, I am scared it wouldn't do the book justice. The writer wrote this book so well, it's as though I am right there in the book with the characters. I really hope he writes a sequel. Did I mention how much I love this book!!
This book is a masterpiece of modern Fantasy. If you are looking for an exciting adventure story with interesting characters and fantastical creatures look no further. Whether you're a long time fantasy fan or a newbie to the genre, this book is the one you want. First timers will find it easy to follow and fantasy veterans will find it refreshingly original.
A fun and fast-paced read in a fantastical world where adventure awaits just beyond the city walls. The characters are fairly well developed and enjoyable.
Syren's Call kept me engaged. I read this book in one day. Syren reminded me of myself as a young girl; capable of so much more than people give credit for, simply because she is a woman. This tale was suspenseful, full of action, and left you holding your breath. Can not wait to see what Rick Skowronski comes out with next.
Not being much of a novel reader and having never read a fantasy novel, I was not sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to read and how very entertaining this book was! I completed it in less than a week and was excited to start each chapter and read about Syren's next adventure! I highly recommend this book!
Syren's Call succeeds on many levels. It has a rich vocabulary, skillful turns of phrase, vivid characters, and a compelling storyline. But I want to praise one success in especial Skrowonski's depiction of the Stouts. Are they dwarfs? You might say "dwarves" if you're thinking of Tolkien's work. Well, obviously yes... and no, they are Stouts. "Deepfellows" they name themselves. Their speech pattern is the crowning jewel. They pluralize words by the number of 'r's they roll. Hence, "treasure" may be pocket change, "trrreasure!" a tidy sum, and "Trrrrrreasure!" the cost of a college education these days. The effect is a sheer delight. Five starrrrrs!
