People are disappearing in Christchurch. Cooper Riley, a psychology professor, doesn't make it to work one day. Emma Green, one of his students, doesn't make it home. When ex-cop Theodore Tate is released from a four-month prison stint, he's asked by Green's father to help find Emma. After all, Tate was in jail for nearly killing her in a DUI accident the year before, so he owes him. Big time. What neither of them knows is that a former mental patient is holding people prisoner as part of his growing collection of serial-killer souvenirs.

This New Zealand noir world created by Paul Cleave is magnificent. This is one of my very favorite noir series. The books involve several recurring characters and stories interweave a bit. This book is about ex-cop-turned-PI Theo Tate, and begins on the day he gets out of jail. He's picked up by his former colleague Det. Schroder, who asks him to look at a case he's working on. Tate is also asked by the father of a young woman from Tate's past to find his missing daughter. Could the two cases be related?First, let me advise you to read these books in order, especially the Tate books (see below) as his continuing backstory is great, and subsequent books make reference to characters and situations from those books and you'll enjoy that.
That said, this could be read as a standalone. Tate's narrative voice is superb -- snarky, world-weary and looking for justice. The chapters alternate among Tate (in first person); Adrian, a wannabe serial killer who is an avid collector; and Cooper, a criminology professor who is abducted. The killer's chapters are an uncomfortable mix of humor and abject creepiness. These aren't Bomd villains. These are people with painful histories and banal evil, more frightening because they seem more real than most stories' boogeymen.
Tate is ALWAYS a detective and is very fun to watch. The story is superb with lots of twists, the pacing is sublime and the dialogue seems authentic. The humor is dry, the observations insightful and Christchurch practically breathes, the descriptions are so good.

Collecting Cooper (Audible Audio Edition) Paul Cleave Paul Ansdell LLC Dreamscape Media Books Reviews
Engaging!!! One of the best reads of the year, for me....hard to put down...looking forward to new releases by Cleave
I started this book and couldn't put it down. Mr. Cleave is a fantastic writer and once you begin to read his work, you will be just as hooked as I am.
I have read a lot of his books, I have preordered some of his later books. It is hard putting his books
down, I hope he writes a lot more. V H
This was my first Paul Cleave novel and I will be looking for more. Other readers here write about this book far more eloquently. All I can say is that it is a thriller from the get-go and you can't put it down. I would highly recommend this book.
Mr. Cleave continues to amaze me with his work. In a field filled with derivative content Mr. Cleave has created a world around Christchurch that fascinates. His stories have cross over content that are so clever and seemless you never see it coming. That being said, each novel is terrific and highly recommended.
Too grisly, and not a sympathetic main character. Couldn't get into it. I've been looking for great New Zealand Mystery authors and Cleave's name has shown up on several lists. Pass.
After receiving an advance copy of a Cleave book on Netgalley, I had to purchase the entire Christchurch Noir series. I am an avid reader of serial killer genre and I had never heard of Cleave and his books, I do not know how. This series is so entertaining, darkly funny and disturbing. I am a fan for life and cannot wait for the next book.
