Oscillating Olaf eBook Jason Werbeloff
Oscillating Olaf is another great story in the ever expanding world of "The Bubble."Anchored by the Defragmenting Daniel trilogy, this tightly constructed world includes three additional short stories - Manufacturing Margaret, Investing Isobella, and now, Oscillating Olaf. All are gems which continue to give "The Bubble" more heft, more weight, making it a place. All the stories delight as they twist and turn back on themselves revealing their previously unseen connections to one another.
In "Olaf," we follow the story of a deaf maintenance man for Bacchus Mall. A brain implant allows him to overcome his lack of hearing. Somehow, combined with the effects of his tinkering on his Phase Modulator, the implant is sending him snippets of what he is going to hear an hour in advance of when they will actually occur. The story is how Olaf will use this phenomenon.
Readers will get a better feeling for how the phases in "The Bubble" work. Start with the trilogy but don't forget to continue with the additional short stories. You'll be glad you did.

Oscillating Olaf eBook Jason Werbeloff Reviews
An intriguing short about poor Olaf, a Russian immigrant. Everything occurs in the same universe as the Deconstructing Daniel series, so readers who have read that will feel right at home. He has a speech-to-text brain implant (that provides quite comical translations of his Russian expletives), and a government issued Phase Modulator. The Phase Modulator keeps everyone in sync in the Bubble in which they live, except Olaf has modified his with unexpected, and quite unintended, results.
I thoroughly enjoyed this short story and would enjoy reading more about Olaf.
Oscillating Olaf is a thoroughly entertaining read; highly humorous. Olaf is orchestrated beautifully as the story builds – as many of Jason’s characters, somewhat sympathetic and flawed as he chases his desires, using his new-found capabilities to chase higher status, including with pastry. The story is barely bawdy beyond the beginning, and the gore-least of the alliterative by far – in fact, none.
I have always enjoyed Werbeloff’s writing, and this is some of his best, playing the equivocation out perfectly, at the end. As with many of his stories, there are repercussions chasing craving, even the rare occasion attained – always there are deals with the devil. Investing Isobella brought want for more of the clones – how much havoc they could wreak in the bubble – Olaf brought reflection on wants, whether aspirations are ephemeral as they are undeserved, or because they are systemically unattainable.
Another very good work by Werbeloff. It is in the Bubble universe and less dark than the other stories already published. It's a complete tale that relies on concepts defined on the "Defragmenting Daniel" series and therefore, I think it's necessary to know how the Bubble science works to understand and appreciate this short.
I'm here thinking of how many stars should I give this one... it all depends on what the reader expects... my only warning, as I already mentioned, is the fact that the reader have to previously know about the phases on the Bubble to understand it and if you're not new to them, certainly it is a worthwhile reading.
This author has me hooked! I look for anything I can by him. I dive into his world and drown in his words with abandon, each breath pulling magic into my lungs. I love peeking into the lives and minds of his creations, and finding the threads of continuity that weave his world together.
Oscillating Olaf was no disappointment to the high standards Werbeloff has created through his previous works. A short, fun read, this novella adds to the already substantial existence of his Bubble world and its inhabitants. O.O. also provides an opportunity to question fate and free will. Although the Defragmenting Daniel series illustrates more fully the inequality of human society, this piece still incites a pondering of our lot in this life along with all the injustices it brings.
*SPOILER ALERT*
When this story could have gone dark, doomed, and depressing, Werbeloff kept enough levity to lubricate the ending that would have been hard to swallow had any other hands crafted this gem. I always want my protagonists to win the day, to overcome to odds and survive the challenges, but, hey, this is Life we're taking about. Not some fairy tale.
Great job, guy. Fantastic, even. Keep 'em coming!
As always, author Jason Werbeloff has written another winning tale from the future!
Olaf, a deaf Russian immigrant living in the "Bubble", a futuristic way of life where the more affluent population resides, is barely getting by. Although he struggles for food, income, respect, love and acceptance, he dreams of a better existence. Although deaf , he is able to communicate with his boss and others in the Bubble with a Phase Moderator implanted in his brain. However his garbled speech is often translated into the most shocking and humorous of ways.
To improve his lot in life, Olaf has recently modified a government-issued phase modulator named 'Svetlana', that he believes he can market to provide the means to live comfortably. While creating Svetlana, Olaf has developed a romantic and sexual relationship with 'her', carrying her attached to his chest, which adds a bit of a twist to the story.
The story really kicks into overdrive when Olaf decides today is the day to 'test' Svetlana's latest modifications, with outrageous and shocking results! He discovers that he can intercept messages from the future with his modification. But how can this improve his life? He begins 'testing' out ways to make this work out to his advantage and with each success, Olaf takes bigger and bigger chances. Take this journey with Olaf as his growing greed leads to a surprising end!
This short story is part of a number of tales written by this skilled author on futuristic life in the affluent 'Bubble' and the empoverished 'Gutter.' Jason Werbeloff Never Disappoints 😉
